In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away close to the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

In the present, in addition to its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism,” Elkin said. “The launch (of this tunnel project) is an additional part of the growth of Jerusalem, and its transformation into a desirable tourist city for all sorts of people in Israel as well as around the globe.”

Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin said that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to change the way we think about transport in Jerusalem.” Elkin said that the new tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike trails. It will also be paved throughout its different areas. This will encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek It is situated to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that also includes the fifth water line to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

Construction of roads, installation, blowers, modern security systems and electrical wiring are all part of the current works. The tunnel is safe for the people to use all entire year.
It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation spots, including Ein Kerem, the Biblical Zoo, aquarium, and the Ein Kerem neighborhood.
