As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem’s capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was once a very popular tourist destination because of its historic past. Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
“The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the goal to change the concept of transportation in Jerusalem,” Elkin said. Elkin stated that the new tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved throughout the various neighborhoods. This will help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.
