Evolution Korea
In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird’s ancestor. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. 에볼루션코리아 is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the creation and evolution of new species.
The term “evolution”, which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck’s disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of living or producing offspring. Over time the genetic variability could cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren’t genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can’t be considered to be evolutionary because they aren’t passed down to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn’t be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their campaign to exclude evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird’s parent.
Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and aids scientists to understand how living things function and develop. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries such as new drugs.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain more about the universe as the life on this planet. It has been rigorously scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, including some religious leaders, support the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn’t conflict with religious beliefs, since the theory is based on things, events and processes in the physical world.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their beliefs. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.
It is important for science educators to support the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the anti-evolution movement has been growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This support is based on many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries that can lead to the development of new medications, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others hold a a strong religious belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation’s six days is literal, and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs might not be as popular However, their beliefs are just as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.
Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires a miracle, and that the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation and refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is also known as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of species created.” The theory says that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution too.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it regards as the “atheist materialism” that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The reasons aren’t clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
