Many people fall into the trap of looking at a nice van and then buying one without considering what they need. Don’t do this. You should first consider your requirements prior to deciding to select the vehicle that you can be converted into the camper.

    Budget

How much money are you willing to spend? This is the first and most important one. Budgets are the most important thing to consider when it comes to your van build and without one things could quickly get out of hand. Although you don’t necessarily need to have one, it will help guide you through deciding what’s essential and what is optional.

You can always find deals however as the saying says, “you get what you pay for.” Doing the wrong thing with your platform can cause maintenance and reliability headaches later down the road. Pouring $30,000 into a $10,000 van with over 150,000 miles on it isn’t making any sense, does it?

If you’re considering a van build platform, be sure you know what you’re getting into. There’s no magic formula for how much of your total budget should go towards the actual van cost. Make sure to budget between $10,000 and $20,000 for the conversion components.

    Height and Length

These are the most important elements that affect the cost of the van. These two aspects are the main determinants of the majority of aspects of your van’s build including its dimensions and layout to amenities such as showers and seating. Part of this also is based on how big of a car you feel comfortable driving. Larger vehicles with a higher incline handle differently from smaller ones.

    Length

How long your van impacts turning radius. It can be harder to maneuver through small spaces such as campgrounds or parking spaces. Vehicle length also affects breakover angle. This topic will be covered in the section on off-road.

The length of the bed will determine its type and orientation. Read our guide to camper van beds for additional information about what to take into consideration when planning your sleeping area. The length of your van will determine the amount of storage space available, capacity, and whether you are able to incorporate showers.

    Height

It’s really important to consider how crucial being to fully stand up is to you. Are you at ease in crouching? Are you comfortable cooking sitting down and putting your pants on lying down in bed? This is a huge one.

Your height can also impact where you can travel. The majority of taller vans aren’t able to fit through banks, drive-thrus, car washes and parking garages among many other places. This might seem small but it doesn’t really hit how restrictive this can be until you have to leave the places you’re used

    Ability to drive off-road

Are you planning to stick to campgrounds and pavements or are you looking to explore your own paths? Check Our Editor Note that are jacked up look badass but come with high prices. Before you buy a mountain bike, consider the place you’ll ride it.

With a simple tire change, most 2WD vans can manage snowy and dirt roads. Certain vans come with better clearance at the factory than others. More on that below.

Breakover angle is a different factor when considering off-road capabilities. Learn more about approach as well as departure and breakover angles. The distance you’re allowed to cross is dependent on the vehicle’s wheelbase and its overall length. Long vans run the risk of getting stuck on tight hills and dragging the rear end as well.

    Gas or diesel

It’s a matter of an individual preference. Both diesel and gas vans are able to do the job effectively. Diesel is more suitable for those who plan to frequently tow your campervan however, you won’t be wrong with either.

You may be able to purchase a diesel-powered van with lots of miles, however, you should always consider the maintenance costs. Diesels can run “forever” however, they need regular maintenance.
