The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.
The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. It is located in southern Israel located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists attended a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was once sought-after tourist destination due to its rich history. Elkin stated that the current tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem’s historic treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. “The opening (of [this] tunnel project is an additional part of the development of Jerusalem, and it’s transformation into a sought-after city to visit for all kinds of audiences throughout Israel and around the globe.”
Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of new attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city to its future… I encourage the cycling community to ride a secure and modern-day route that takes you through Old Jerusalem.
Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
Elkin stated, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument for achieving our dream to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem.” “The tunnel is set to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path. נווה פריצקי It will be connected to the many cycle paths already in the city. These will be paved within the various neighborhoods. The objective is to encourage cycling among the residents of the city.
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The works currently underway include road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, to make the tunnel safe for the public to pass through throughout the year.
