Evolution Korea

For a long time, the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The word “evolution” comes from the Latin word”evolution” which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck’s embryologist pupil who came up with the term “transmutation” to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time this genetic variation can result in the development of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. Such a change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can’t be considered to be evolutionary because they aren’t passed down to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory shouldn’t be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans as well as Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the bird’s ancestor.

It is essential for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation, and refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes referred to as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from created kinds.” In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution in their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the “atheist materialism” that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren’t entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have given talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
