The only thing it doesn’t have that you can’t find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren’t clean. It’s also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don’t stay on well and aren’t able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad for a dry one in seconds.

This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the rivals. It’s one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company’s robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It’s also the only robot vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to fall asleep.

It’s also somewhat expensive, but it’s not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and look better. If you’re willing with a bit more noise and a little more cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine, similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock’s S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum, refills the water tank, and cleans and drys mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn’t completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with an attribute called “Intelligent Dirt Detection”, which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas in the home based on how dirty these areas tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a model with a the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you inform the robot of which area of your home must be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have lot furniture. Also, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you’d think from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro).
