The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding that should be enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bicycle tunnel, was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.
נווה פריצקי The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.
The opening ceremony of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) along with hundreds of cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist destination due to its rich past. Nowadays, aside from its rich history the city also offers modern tourism.” Elkin said. “The opening of this tunnel is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem and its transformation into a dazzling tourist city for all types of people in Israel and throughout the globe.”
Elkin’s ministry, which was responsible for the project along in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds and millions of shekels each year in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and in creating exciting attractions and ventures that link the amazing historical time of our capital city and the future.” I would like to invite cyclists to visit and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem.”
Elkin’s ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
Elkin stated, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem.” Elkin stated that the new tunnel connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike routes. The tunnel will also be paved throughout its different areas. It will also encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Present projects include road construction, installation blowers, as well as advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe to use during the entire year.
